Museum praised by Mayor

Havering Museum has been praised by Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, for its volunteer programme.

The Museum is staffed almost entirely by volunteers (over 40 in total!), ranging from young people in the Borough currently at college, to those who are happily retired and live in Havering. It is fair to argue without our dedicated and friendly volunteers Havering Museum would not be able to function.

Havering Museum is proud to be listed alongside institutions such as HMS Belfast, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre and the Imperial War Museum in the Mayor’s 2011 guide to volunteering in the capital. This was also acknowledged recently in the Romford Recorder (8/7/11).

Our mention in the Mayor’s guide (which you can read here) focuses on Project E. Project Exhibition, or Project “E” for short, is aimed at young people (aged 16 to 20). This is a unique opportunity for the young people of Havering to develop skills and create their own exhibition.

This year, Project E created a Victorian Experience about domesticity and social life in Victorian Havering, through fun, creative and interactive activities. Come to Havering Museum on Friday 29 July, 12 noon to 4 pm to explore Project E’s Victorian Experience.

Project E will be running again this Autumn. If you are interested in becoming involved please telephone the Museum on 08452 707 737 to register your details, and also keep checking the Havering Museum website www.haveringmuseum.org.uk for more information.

Mr Johnson was also enthusiastic about Havering Museum when he visited back on Thursday 5 May 2011. He even took time out to speak to some of our volunteers and sign our visitors’ book.
